Occupational and Environmental Medicine providers are increasingly working in austere environments. This article details some of the lessons learned from Haiti.

The response to Haiti taught us many things- personal preparedness is one of them.

In the midst of the chaos surrounding the recovery efforts in Haiti, the United Nations and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) requested that OMI conduct a survey of existing electronic patient tracking and medical record systems. The OMI team formed the Haiti Information Technology (HIT) Rescue Project and simultaneously field tested and deployed a mobile EMR in eastern Haiti. Electronic medical records and mobile health IT are critical in modern disaster response. And, the OMI team has shown that these systems can be effectively deployed in austere environments.

The United Nations is the lead coordinating agency now for relief efforts in Haiti. Though there are critical gaps in the current response, it is important for volunteers, donors and concerned citizens of the world to have an understanding of the leadership structure on the ground. The UN Cluster system is an attempt to coordinate the massive flood of volunteer agencies and individuals. Attached is a memo describing the system.
